About Us

Beyond the Scale by Marx was created for people who are tired of doing everything “right” and still feeling like nothing is working.

Maybe you have cut down on rice. Maybe you have tried going to the gym. Maybe you have counted calories, skipped snacks, avoided your favorite food, or restarted every Monday more times than you can remember. And still, the scale barely moves.

That can make you feel like the problem is you.

But most of the time, it is not.

At Beyond the Scale by Marx, we believe many people do not fail because they are lazy, weak, or undisciplined. They struggle because they were given incomplete information. They were told to “eat less and move more,” but not how fat loss actually works in real life. They were told to be consistent, but not how to build a plan that survives family dinners, busy schedules, cravings, stress, poor sleep, and normal human days.

That is why this brand exists.

Beyond the Scale by Marx is built on one simple belief: health should be practical, honest, and livable. It should not make you feel guilty for enjoying food. It should not require expensive meal plans, extreme diets, or a perfect routine. It should fit into real life, because real life is where health actually happens.

Hi, I’m Marx Catalan, RMT, PhD. I am a licensed Medical Technologist, a college professor, a fitness enthusiast, and honestly, just someone who has been through the same frustration many beginners feel.

There was a time when I weighed around 80 kilograms. I was cycling, watching what I ate, and trying to do what I thought was right. But my blood chemistry results were above normal, and my doctor had me on medication. I felt confused because I believed I was already making an effort. I thought I needed more discipline. I thought I needed to work harder.

Eventually, I learned that the missing piece was not effort.

It was knowledge.

When I started understanding fat loss more clearly, things began to change. Not overnight. Not through punishment. Not by removing every food I enjoyed. The change came through small, smart, realistic decisions repeated over time.

I still eat my Friday Snickers. I still enjoy Starbucks. I still eat with my family. I still live a normal life. I just learned how to make better decisions within that life.

But my reason for getting healthier was never really about looking good. My father passed away from colon cancer at 48. My brother passed away at 37. My sister passed away at 41. Later, my own colonoscopy revealed three polyps that had to be removed.

That changed the way I saw health.

It was no longer about chasing a certain body. It became about living longer, moving better, having energy, and staying in the room longer with the people I love.

That is the heart behind Beyond the Scale.

We create simple, science-grounded, real-world wellness resources for everyday people who want to get healthier without losing themselves in the process. Our first guide, The Scale Is Lying, was written for beginners who feel stuck, confused, and tired of starting over. It introduces the R.E.A.L. Framework: Recalibrate, Expose, Audit, and Load Up — a practical way to understand progress, find hidden calorie leaks, check lifestyle habits, and eat smarter without starving.

This is not generic internet advice. It is not outsourced content. It is built from clinical knowledge, teaching experience, personal trial and error, and the daily practice of applying health principles in a normal life.

We believe knowledge should come before guilt. Sustainability should matter more than perfection. Food should not be labeled as good or bad. And health education should feel like guidance from a knowledgeable friend, not a lecture from someone looking down on you.

Beyond the Scale is still just beginning. More guides are coming on calorie management, hunger, mindset, social eating, and long-term wellness. But the bigger goal is not just to sell ebooks. The goal is to build a space where slow progress is respected, imperfect weeks are normal, and starting over does not mean you are back to zero.

If you are here because you are frustrated, confused, or tired of guessing, I want you to know this:

You are not broken.

You are not hopeless.

You may just need the right information, explained in a way that finally makes sense.

And I’m glad you found us.
